Hiring Skips
The information below will help you with questions you may have about skip hire. Please contact us if you don’t find what you’re looking for, and we’ll be pleased to help.
What size of skip do I need?
Our online booking form for domestic customers contains useful information that should help you to gauge the size of skip that you need. We also have a separate page devoted to helping you with skip sizes.
Are there items that I can’t put in a skip?
There are a variety of different waste types that are classified as hazardous because of their potential to cause harm to the environment and/or any human beings that come into contact with them. Hazardous waste requires special disposal and it is illegal to put it into a general waste skip. The most common hazardous wastes that are put into skips by accident include:
• Asbestos
• Tyres
• Batteries
• Fluorescent Tubes
• Paint Cans
• Contaminated Wipes/Rags
• Contaminated Soils
• Chemical Containers
• Medical Waste
• Fridges/Freezers
• Televisions/ Computer Monitors
• Solvents
• Liquids
• Oil
• Plasterboard
Please note that if we find hazardous waste in your skip we reserve the right to remove it before we take the skip away. However, we can remove certain kinds of hazardous waste by other methods. In particular, if you have a fridge/freezer, TV/Monitor or plasterboard to dispose of then please contact us and we will be happy to arrange a special collection.
How much will it cost?
Our online booking form contains details of our base skip prices for domestic customers. Trade customers, or those looking for multiple skips, are welcome to contact our sales team for a no obligation quote. We also have a dedicated page with more information about the factors affecting skip hire prices.
Do I need a permit?
A local authority skip permit is required when you want to put a skip somewhere that isn’t your private property, usually a verge or public highway. As your skip hire company it is our responsibility to make sure that you have permission to do this. We therefore ask you where you plan to put the skip as part of our online booking process. If necessary, we will then obtain a permit on your behalf.
Please note that the time it takes for your local authority to supply the permit can have an impact on how soon your skip can be delivered. Whether or not you need a permit will also affect the cost of skip hire.
What if I only need the skip on site for short time?
If you can load your skip quickly then we are happy to arrange a wait-and-load service. This can often result in a discount on your skip hire and can also help you to avoid the cost of a permit if the skip would otherwise have to be left on a public highway. Please contact us for more information.
How long will it take for my skip to arrive?
If no permit is required then we can sometimes provide same day delivery for your skip. Even when this is not possible, we can usually guarantee next day delivery provided that you place your order by 2pm.
If you do need a permit then the delivery time can vary depending on your local authority area. Some of the councils within the area covered by 2020 Recycling are very quick to process permit applications; some take much longer. Our online booking form automatically accounts for the typical time taken by your local council when allowing you to select your preferred delivery date.
Please contact us for more information on delivery times in your area.
Do I have to wait in for the skip?
No. We take payment in advance, so provided you have cleared sufficient space for the skip and/or left instructions for the driver using our booking form then there is no need for you to be present when your skip is delivered.
What sort of access does the delivery lorry need?
The vehicles that deliver our skips are LGVs and are therefore very large. We generally advise two clear lorry lengths to allow the safe loading and unloading of the skip, plus approximately a 10 foot wide clearance to allow the passage of the lorry. If you think that space might be tight then please contact us and we can provide you with more detailed information on the dimensions required.
How long can I keep the skip?
Our pricing is based on a 7 day hire period.
What if I need the skip for longer than this?
We are happy to discuss arrangements for long term skip hire or ‘static skips’. Please contact us for further information.
Will you recycle all my waste?
We aim to recycle as much of your waste as we possibly can and to minimise the quantity that has to be taken to landfill. Our recycling centre is capable of handling most major waste streams and we are currently recycling around 85% of all the waste that we collect.
What are your credentials?
The management team at 2020 Recycling has over 25 years of experience in the waste industry. We are fully licensed by the Environment Agency as Waste Brokers and Carriers, and we have all the appropriate documentation.
